>A publication of the Media Access Group at WGBH
>Summer/Fall 2003 Volume 14, Issue 2
>
>Letter from the Director
>
>The summer movie blockbuster season is here! Hollywood is releasing dozens=
=20
>of films between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and the Media Access Group at=
=20
>WGBH is making many of these accessible with video description and=20
>captioning on the day and date of their release.
>
>We are working with the home video distributors of the films to encourage=
=20
>them to include the DVS=AE track on the DVD release, as there are few=20
>technological barriers to doing this. DVDs can hold a lot of information,=
=20
>and most DVD producers are using that disk space to add special features=20
>related to the film. Our challenge is to encourage the DVD producers to=20
>save some space for the DVS track.
>
>We=92re also encouraging DVD producers to add the =93talking=
 menu/navigation=94=20
>features that have been developed by the Media Access Group=92s National=20
>Center for Accessible Media. A DVD with both the DVS track and the talking=
=20
>menu feature is a thing to behold!
>
>We continue to add additional titles to our DVS Home Video=AE Catalogue by=
=20
>making use of the descriptions that were created when the films originally=
=20
>were released. We are focusing our efforts on those titles that are not=20
>already available with video description on DVD.
>
>It is our goal to make every film we describe for its theatrical release=20
>available with descriptions for its subsequent release on DVD or VHS.=20
>Issues around distribution rights and costs sometimes keep us from meeting=
=20
>that goal, but we continue to forge ahead and do our best.
>
>As always, it helps to know which films you are interested in watching=20
>with video description. Feel free to call or send us your preferences. We=
=20
>look forward to hearing from you!
>
>Sincerely,
>
