I had forgotten how nice the Mig-3 was. You can basically just put it on 50%
mix (I think you can actually go to 80%) and full rpm and it is still
continuous. As long as you stay fast you can throw it around to your hearts
content. It helped that we were forced to fly low as it will out turn the E7
up to 5000m but the F2 starts to out turn it over 1000m.

The replacement cable for my VR headset was delivered yesterday, so having been
out of action for a while it was a test day for me and I was rather rusty.
After shooting down Crust I later flew a Hurricane, after a map change, in very
bad weather, including rain and very thick low cloud. Sadly I got spotted in
the cloud and was promptly shot down twice, LOL. I must improve my poor
weather flying skills and will need to set up a training session using the QMB
I think. Very much enjoyed the squad night flying in poor weather last night
:)

The first one was a bounce, The Hurricane dives quite well in that it is very
stable and doesn’t get too fast too easily, unlike the Spitfire which gets fast
quick and looses an aileron!
We decided though that rather use boom and zoom with the Hurricane after the
initial bounce we would “saddle up” close and beat them in a turn fight. This
worked OK The Hurricane doesn’t maintain energy well compared to either a
109E-7 or F-2.
The second fight was very different and the 109 driver was more alert. We saw
him climbing out from his field, he saw us obviously and climb turned back
towards his field, we kept our distance and tried to stay in the sun, we turned
after a while and went back towards him, we were at 21,000’ he was below us, in
front of us by 10km and climbing hard, we had almost caught up to him by the
time he was at our altitude but then he levelled off and we were tail chasing
him, luckily it turned out, to the South where our airfields were.
Well we couldn’t catch him but he wasn’t really getting away from us either,
after some time Moose and knew we had to do something to force a fight. As we
were all heading south, Moose and I turned right onto west, it worked, he
turned and was now following us, during the long chase south though we had got
up to 30,000’, so we decided to bring the 109 lower a bit so Moose and I did a
shallow dive to loose height but build up speed. The 109 kept his height and
kept above us, perfect, we were setting a trap and getting nearer to home, we
had been up a while now and wouldn’t have wanted this fight to happen way over
enemy lines!
Then the fight proper began, he started diving down, at the right moment we
called a break, we were still line abreast 400m apart and so we could tell
which of us he was going for, each time the attacked Hurricane broke away the
free Hurricane could do a climbing turn towards the 109 to force him back up or
risk getting sandwiched. The 109 pilot was mostly smart, quite a few times as
he began his dive down he saw what we were up to, realised he wouldn’t get a
shot on the Hurricane he was aiming for because it had started a turn ands he
was obliged to pull up into a climb straight away, It was during one of these
repeated attempts of his that he finally got a bit lucky and got a couple of
hits on Moose, no real damage done but Moose was smoking a little bit, the 109
could tell us apart now and he was getting greedy.
On another of his dives I had managed to do a climbing turn above Moose so as
the 109 went down for Moose I got a fleeting shot with the x4 Hispano MkII’s,
in that fleeting, 1 second, high deflection shot, 40 20mm cannon rounds flew
through the air towards the 109 and at least 1 shell caught his engine, the 109
was billowing thick black smoke now and he left the fight, a few seconds later
Moose saw him hit the snowy ground away to our west.
We landed together, the fight had ended, as planned, a few km from our
temporary airfield. Good communication and a solid tactic meant we won the
fight, still, there was 2 of us and 1 of him.
