The Science of Cycling

http://www.exploratorium.edu/cycling/index.html

From the Exploratorium, takes a look at the science behind the
sport. Readers will discover an impressive range of information
on everything from gears to aerodynamics.

"The Science of Cycling is a large Web site (there are over 20
pages in six main sections, 20 audio and video clips, interactive
javascripts, and lots of images), it is really only an
introduction to an enormous and fascinating topic." - from the
website

Divided into topics such as Braking and Steering, Frames and
Materials, and the Wheel, the site delves into the relevant
properties of each. These include an exploration of questions
such as the best materials and designs for frames, why mountain
bikes have fat tires while road bikes have thin ones, and the
always perplexing -- what forces keep a bike from falling over.
The ever-popular timeline provides a concise overview of the
history of the bicycle while fascinating background material on
the culture of cycling is featured as well.
