I spent a few early hours this morning checking various shorebird ponds. I
discovered another good pond south of Ripon at the junction of 44/49 and KK
(Fond du Lac co.). There were only 3 shorebird species but one was
Black-necked Stilt (pair). Also there were several thousand Bonaparte's Gulls.
The A/Miller pond had 100 Pectoral Sandpipers, 25 Greater and 10 Lesser
Yellowlegs, 3 Dunlins, and Killdeer plus a few thousand Bonaparte's Gulls and
the pair of Brewer's Blackbirds.
The Lake Maria Rd pond had only standard waterfowl, no shorebirds.
Jersey/Breezy Pt ponds are drying up, especially along Jersey. The Breezy
Pt/151 pond had no shorebirds, probably because a Peregrine Falcon was perched
in the tree.
The boardwalk pond on the Auto Tour is rapidly being drawn down. Surprising
how much lower today than 2 days ago. Yellowlegs were all over the pond, plus
a few Pectorals and Killdeer and 1 Solitary Sandpiper. The pond by the pump
house along 49 is apparently being drawn down as mud is present near the
highway. Only yellowlegs were present but if this draw down continues it bares
watching.
