Congrats to Ryan Brady, frequent contributor to Wisbirdnet. He and two co-authors just published a fine paper in the Journal of Field Ornithology: Brady, R. S., J.D. Paruk, and A. T. Kern 2009. "Sexing adult Northern Shrikes using DNA, morphometrics, and plumage". J. Field Ornith.:80 (2): 198-205. Briefly, this research paper details their work in determining the sex of 50 banded adults using DNA from feather samples, and dimensions and relative extent of coloration of specific feathers - this research and their findings ultimately may be used "to examine inter- and intrasexual differences in behavior and ecology" of adults of this species. Although I would like to provide a link to this paper, unfortunately, I cannot - it is only available to subscribers of the journal. But if you're interested, you can find a copy in any good-sized university library. Other valuable papers in this issue include one on wintering hummingbirds in Alabama and Florida (ten years of data on the six species most frequently found in these states in winter), one on tail-pumping as a predator deterrent mechanism in Eastern Phoebes, and many others.
