Time is running out to make comments on this proposal that may destroy
Green Island?s importance to birds, and turn it into a condominium-style
housing development. Comments need to be sent to the Army Corps of
Engineers by Monday the 27th. Green Island (in Green Bay) has been a
documented colonial bird nesting site for over 100 years. It currently has
99% of all the Black-crowned Night heron (state watch species) nests in NE.
Wisconsin. It has colony of Great Egrets (state threatened) and alsoa
Great Blue Heron colony. Shoreline is heavily used by nesting Herring Gulls
and has also supported Ring-billed gulls in the past. Waterfowl nesting
there include Mallard, Gadwall, Black, Red-breasted and Common Mergansers.
The Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) public notice document can be found at
http://www.mvp.usace.army.mil/docs/regulatory/ip_wi/2011003142PN.pdf. The
notice ends on Monday, February 27th. If anyone would like to submit
formal comments regarding the proposal, please make sure they are submitted
by the 27th.
