A male common merganser has since yesterday evening been hanging around the E. Main St. bridge over the Yahara R. - was hauled out on some rocks along the shore for hours. Completely unphased by all the boat traffic and humans w/in feet of it. Very strange. Today, it is in the water but rt wing is droopy and appears mis-shapen, perhaps no primaries. Also, appears a bit "twitchy" - botulism? Bird is drinking, preening, but appears unable to dive/feed. What to do? Let nature take its course? Intervene? Jim Lutes - your advice? Others?
