Hi Mariette, Sorry - my computer ate my message! So I'll start over. I have been in Britain several times in the past few years, and have used the old Peterson, Mountfort, and Hollom Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe with success. But then, I am used to Peterson and realize this is, although thorough, not as up to date as one might wish. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has put out a second edition of RSPB Handbook of British Birds, by Peter Holden and Tim Cleeves, ISBN 978-0-7136-7560-3. This covers the most common 282 species, but covers those quite thoroughly, with good discussion and nice illustrations of sitting and flying poses as well as plumages where needed (e.g., gulls). Distribution maps are easy to read and well discussed also. Unless you are after rarities like the Great Bustard, this should prove quite helpful. You can find this at www.acblack.com. In addition, there is a nice folding map (good for packing), Bill Oddie's Birding Map of Britain and Ireland, ISBN 1-84330-758-8, which opens out quite large and covers the "top 340 birding sites". Note that these sites tend to cluster near the coasts. Selected ones are discussed in detail, and you should be able to locate any more info you need on line. For this, see www.newhollandpublishers.com Good birding! Libby Zimmerman Cambridge, Jefferson Co, WI (not England!)
