Spruce Grouse are as detectable as they'll be all year right now as males
perform flutter-flight displays in lowland black spruce bogs and adjacent
upland conifers in northern-tier counties. I visited one of my Atlas blocks
near Clam Lake in southern Ashland County on Wednesday and found the male
pictured below. Also had a Gray Jay and some singing bog breeders like
Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Purple Finches, and a
few others. The woods are pretty quiet yet up here, though Hermit Thrushes are
now prevalent and a host of others will arrive this week.

Yesterday I led 20 participants on a field trip for the Natural Resources
Foundation of Wisconsin and we found 6 males at several locations in
northeastern Sawyer County. This trip is an important fundraiser for the Great
Wisconsin Birdathon and NRF's Bird Protection Fund. Look for it again next year!
Back in Ashland, I had 4 Greater White-fronted and 4 Cackling Geese amid some
Canadas yesterday. Nick Anich had 21 Willets at the head of Chequamegon Bay
just west of town.
