I spent the late morning & afternoon scouting Birdathon spots today. Tried
several spots that have had Cattle Egrets but but whiffed at all including
- KK & B south of the Village of Marquette, Co. Rd E just east of Hwy 22
just south of the Marquette Co. line, Co. Rd A/W just west of Waupun.
Whiffed on the forbidden Whooping Cranes south of Monty on Hwy 22, just
north of B.
It was so dark at Lake Maria & Emily on the Green Lake & Dodge Co. that
i could not make out much. Emily was dead, but it had boats on it. Maria
was slow with no Wow birds that i could make out.
Horicon 49/Pumphouse we got Least Sandpipers & a few usual reported
shorebirds.
The Auto-Loop we got 2 Yellow Rumped Warblers (our only warblers of the
day).
We saw several shorebird species on the boardwalk on the Auto-Loop
including the Ruff & 2 Wilson's Phalaropes & several Black Necked Stilts.
Still had Rusty Blackbirds there also.

Hit Oakwood Rd just S/E of Hwy 151 next & saw nothing unusual.
Looped up to Breezy/Jersey/A & saw nothing exciting.
Further west thru Fox Lake we stopped at a pond on the south side of Hwy 33
about a mile & a quarter west of Hwy 73 & had very good looks at 2 closer
to breeding plumage Wilson's Phalaropes than we saw at Horicon. That spot
is east of Friesland in eastern Columbia Co.
We hit Miller & Co. Rd. A in Green Lake Co. next. It was really
drying up & had zero Bonapartes Gulls left. We saw both Yellowlegs & Pecs,
& Semi-Palmated Sandpipers there.
Just north of there on Co. Rd. A near fire number N4670 we blew past 9
American Golden Plovers in a damp plowed field. Specifically it was about a
100 yds south of the farm, but on the west side of A. They were very close
to a white plastic bag about 70 yds off the road. 7 of the 9 were in
spectacular plumage that i couldn't even miss at 60 mph.
We tried the Hwy's 44/49 & KK spot next, but it was dry.
KK & just south of Hwy 23 east of Ripon in Fon du Lac Co. still had the 2
Black Necked Stilts, a Wison's Snipe & other shorebirds. That has good
water yet.
A spot on Co. Rd. M just south of Pickett was drying up but still had
Yellowlegs.
We checked the Hwy 21 & east of Hwy 49 pond but low light hurt ID'ing any
potentially good birds.
I am still missing a Pipit & Creeper on the yr. on my 141 Wis. birds.
