Jim Otto, Nolan Pope and I went over to Lake Michigan today. We started at North Point in Sheboygan - had a few Great Black-backed and Glaucous Gulls, but couldn't turn any of the many Herring or Ring-bills into anything more interesting. There was one Black Duck in with all the Mallards and hybrids by the parking lot. Our next stop was by the Coast Guard Station at the dead end. After scutinizing the ducks against the far breakwall, we found a nice adult male Black Scoter (been awhile since I've seen one of those,) the drake Barrow's Goldeneye, and a White-winged Scoter. Had a couple more GBBs there, as well. From the Blue Harbor side of the river, we had pretty much the same suite of birds, although there was one gull that gave us pause. It seemed to be an adult Herring Gull without white windows in the primaries - no streaking on the head that we could see. We relocated downriver to see if we could get a closer look, but never were sure if we were seeing the same bird after that. It can drive you nuts... Kohler-Andrae was pretty quiet - just a few ducks and gulls, including another Glaucous. By the entrance station feeders, we saw an "Oregon"-type Junco (full black hood, brown back and tan sides.) At the end of County D by Harrington Beach SP (Ozaukee Co.), there were large flocks of Greater Scaup, with scattered Common Goldeneye, Common & Red-breasted Mergansers, and a few Buffleheads. There were large flocks of Long-tailed Ducks way out, also. We relocated to the main beach, where we saw a flyby Red-throated Loon (I had two more, but couldn't get Jim and Nolan onto those birds.) Nice to get some "sea ducks" today, but the lack of any Thayer's or Kumlien's Gulls was a bit disappointing. Have to start checking the Johnson Creek landfill, I guess...
