Good evening, yesterday I was able to view this life bird for about 3 hours
or so. I arrived at Goose Lake about 1pm, and quickly headed to the back
ponds, due to the incoming weather and previous reports. I found several
other people and we looked for about a half hour, found handfuls of
eastern, but no say's. Then the sky started getting dark and it was time to
get back to the truck. On the way back I talked to someone that saw the
bird close to the lake. So I checked the radar and saw a slim, fast moving
rain storm, that I figured I would just wait out. Once the rain
stopped, about a half hour or so, I quickly made my way back out. Searching
the area around the lake, I found 15-20 FOY Northern Flickers foraging the
open fields and in the trees. They were everywhere. I then walked down to
the lake and saw 3 FOY Ring-necked Ducks. They swam away from me towards
the other the side/point of the lake. That's when I saw four
phoebes flying around the base of the shore. I looked through my binoculars
and knew right away that one was the say's. The only problem was, it was
really far away. I made my way around the lake and through the heavy brush,
only to end up about 150' on the other side of the bird. So, I worked my
way back in and found a trail, that kind of lead me to the point. I was
buried in brush, but got close enough, with a very tiny window to operate
my camera through. I had to use the branches as a tripod, because it was
so thick. I stayed in that spot for just over two hours. The Say's Phoebe
stayed in the same tree the entire time, flying out to catch bugs, singing
when coming back to land, and chasing all Eastern Phoebes that would come
close. It was very aggressive. While there, I also saw and heard 2 FOY
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 3 Brown Creeper, 7 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2
White-breasted Nuthatch, 6 Eastern Phoebe, 7 Hooded Merganser, 4
Bufflehead, 2 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Fox Sparrows. In general, there
was a lot of bird activity in the whole area! Pictures from the day, are at
