Sorry for the late post on some of this. I birded at the SS/GG ponds and
flooded fields (southeast of Bloomer) Sunday and yesterday, and this area
still holds enough water to be very interesting. There were still about 40
Tundra Swans there yesterday with geese (2 on nests in the pond by the
farm) and many ducks of various species, plus gulls and a few arrival
shorebirds: 4 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, and what I think was
a Pectoral Sandpiper (along with a few Killdeer). So we do have a
shorebird spot this spring after all.
The gull show has begun at Lake Altoona, and now that the dam has been
repaired and the water level is back to normal, the usual pattern of all
the gulls collecting just north of Lake Shore Park for the night has
resumed. On Monday the 4th, the swarm of a couple thousand gulls included
2 Lesser Black-backed (adult and first year birds) and an Iceland Gull,
which was there for a little while and then apparently left, as I couldn't
refind it. On Tuesday only the adult black-backed was still there. It's
nice to have the Lesser Black-backeds coming through again after not seeing
any last fall for the first time in several years.
