40+ enthusiastic birdwatchers gathered at 6 a.m. for a 5+ hour journey to locations in Waukesha, Jefferson, & Walworth Co. Nearly all of the target birds for the day were actually seen by some or all of the trip participants. Highlights from the various stops were: Scuppernong Ski/Hiking Trails ~ PRAIRIE, PINE, and HOODED WARBLERS, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, TUFTED TITMOUSE, WOOD THRUSH, and drumming PILEATED WOODPECKER Scuppernong Prairie ~ Various stops along Wilton Road, Hwys N & 59 produced both ALDER and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, BOBOLINKS, and SEDGE WREN. A flyover COMMON LOON was a most unexpected sighting there! Carlin Trail Rd ~ A BARRED OWL posed for pictures and a couple of CERULEAN WARBLERS sang nearby. Tamarack Road ~ Watched GRASSHOPPER, VESPER, and SAVANNAH SPARROWS as they perched and sang. Young Road (West of Tamarack/East of Hwy H) ~ A LARK SPARROW hopped around right in the middle of the road, ORCHARD ORIOLES were active, and a sneaky BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO flew in and was observed by a few participants. While the trip was officially over at that point, many of us opted to try for a Snowy Egret that had recently been seen NW of Palmyra. The habitat there was mostly dried up, but we all got to enjoy singing PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS and DICKCISSELS instead! Total number of species for the day was around 80.
