Driving back home from the town dump this morning, I drove up 55th Drive south of Hwy. 20. This place has proved reliable for longspurs and buntings in past years and thus far this year. What I noticed this morning however (without binoculars unfortunately) is the HIGH percentage of longspurs. The first flock encountered between Cnty. Hwy. C and 58th Road to the south was perhaps 100 birds, most of those Snow Buntings and I imagine a smattering of larks and longspurs, but as I drove north slowly (to see the birds fairly well as they flew from the side of the road) I noticed that the flocks were almost pure longspurs. This 2.3 mile road might be worth checking with proper optics for anyone in the area. Bong continues to produce a few Short-ears for the lucky as well as Rough-legged Hawks and at least 2 Northern Shrikes. Merry Christmas everyone!
