This morning around 7:30 I drove out to Paradise Valley to see what birds I
could find. Right away, I heard American Bitterns pumping and a Sora was
heard doing it's whinny call. I decided to head west and then south where
yellow-headed Blackbirds are most frequently found. Along the way I heard at
least 4 Virginia Rails, a Least Bittern and several Marsh Wrens. The
Yellow-headed Blackbirds numbered around a dozen and were calling loudly. I
heard several more American Bitterns, which continued to 'pump' well into
the 9:00 hour. Ducks seen were Redheads, Widgeon, Blue and Green-winged
Teal, N. Shovelers, Gadwall and Mallards. Coots were numerous and were
acting frisky.
I then headed back towards the ADA Blind, where I spotted a familiar face -
Tom Wood. We were both hoping to find the Black-necked Stilts seen by Tom S.
and Andrea S. a few days ago, but none put in an appearance. There were 3
Trumpeter swans, a Mute swan, 2 DC Cormorants, 4 White Pelicans, a Northern
Harrier, a Sandhill Crane on the path and a Yellowlegs that flew over.
It was a slightly misty, but delightful morning to be out enjoying this
place, which was a muck farm not so many years ago.
