I check ebird to track the movement, of Smith's Longspurs. The sighting have
moved up to nothern Il. So there are most likly some in Wisconsin. Just seeing
them in a field is a real longshot. If you have ever watched a longspur flock
land ,and dissappear, you know what I mean. But I've noticed that many sighting
are at edges of where shorebirds maybe, and surronding areas.
While they don't really hang with the Laplands, they may like the same habitat.
So, while checking out the shorebird spots, take note of the small birds in
the background. I think Wisconsin has a shot at seeing some this year.
And if you have a field with good habitat, take a hike. The things that pop up
may suprise you.
Nolan and I plan to hike a field Saturday. Will we find a Smith's? Probably
not. But it doesn't hurt to try. And it's not very crowded.
