I checked Port Washington Harbor first because a Laughing Gull had been seen
there yesterday (per ebird). I had no luck with that but saw FOY Cliff
Swallow and Chimney Swifts. There were plenty of Barn and Northern
Rough-winged Swallows, Caspian Terns, and one Peregrine was perched on the
power plant.
I then drove Six Mile Road and was happy to see two Upland Sandpipers not
far north from Dixie Road. They used to nest there, but with the horse farm
and new homes there, I don't know if they still do. Meadowlarks, Savannah
Sparrows, Kestrels, and a Brown Thrasher were also seen on this drive.
When I turned the corner at the end of Six Mile Road in Sheboygan County, a
(FOY) Spotted Sandpiper flew up from the ponds there. The Sheboygan
waterfront had plenty of Caspian Terns and a single Lesser Black-backed Gull
which didn't stay long. The water level is very high and there were no
shorebirds on the rocks. I was unable to conjure up a Piping Plover on the
sandy beach, but I hope one arrives soon.
Kohler-Andrae State Park amazed me with the large number of Pine Warblers
(at least 7) including one under the feeder at the entrance station.
White-throated Sparrows were numerous- I estimate 30-40 in the flocks I
flushed today. (FOY) birds seen in the park were Blue-headed Vireo,
Swainson's Thrush, and Eastern Kingbird. Unlike Daryl, I had zero luck with
any warbler other than Pine. Not a single Yellow-rump! There were several
House Wrens, Winter Wrens, Eastern Towhees, Hermit Thrushes, Brown Creepers,
52 Cedar Waxwings, and Horned Grebes on the lake.
As I type this with my window open here at home, I here an Eastern Towhee, a
White-throated Sparrow, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, and a Yellow Warbler
singing. The good times are here!
