I participated in my 3rd annual 'Girl's Trip' of winter birding along with
Andy Paulios, Dave Sample, Ryan Brady, and Sharon Gericke Fandel this past
weekend. I know some of you are re-reading that first sentence in
confusion, but perhaps it can be explained during one of the upcoming
Madison Birds and Brew events. Anyways, there are many interesting
sightings to report from the trip. COMMON REDPOLLS were prevalent
throughout the trip, but the highlight was seeing a flock of 450+ on a
residential street in Siren, Burnett Co. Approximately 20 WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were also seen in town.

Also in Burnett Co., we saw 7 TRUMPETER SWANS, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and the
only WHITE-THROATED SPARROW for the trip near Yellow Lake. A large flock
(>1500) of SNOW BUNTINGS was also a nice find at the Forengo Cattle Farm.

In Douglas Co., we saw our only PINE GROSBEAK of the trip on Fall Road. At
Pioneer Trail, we had nice views of a NORTHERN GOSHAWK. At the Superior
Airport, we saw two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and one adult male SNOWY OWL. The
Snowy was marked with a green wing tag and black dye? paint? on the right
side of its face.

At Clam Lake, Ashland Co., there was a flock of 25 EVENING GROSBEAKS coming
to a feeder.

In the Chequamegon National Forest in Sawyer Co., we saw our only SPRUCE
GROUSE, a male sitting motionless in a balsam fir. Also saw White-winged
Crossbills at this location.

Finally, at Canal Park in Duluth, we saw 2 RING-BILLED GULLS, 1 THAYER'S
GULL, 1 ICELAND GULL, 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, 1 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, and lots
of Herring Gulls.

Much fun was had by all, and be sure to ask Andy about everything bagels
the next time you see him.

Good Birding!
