I spent the day birding in Forest, Vilas and Oneida counties. Most of the time was spent in the first two cos. This will echo what has been posted recently and what I found over a month ago, although this time it was even more quiet! Beautiful (clear and upper 30s) but QUIET!! "Highlights" included 80+ Common Redpolls, divided between Argonne and Alvin, with a Hoary also at the first site; 21 Pine Grosbeaks along Hwy 55 between Argonne and Hwy 70 ("flocks" of 2, 3, 12 and 4); 12 Evening Grosbeaks (all at the north feeder; they left after about 10 minutes); only 4 total Red-br. Nuthatches; Pine Siskins and Goldfinches; a Pileated WP along Hwy 55 where the last flock of Pines were found; and 12 Ravens. And then there were the forest roads---2182, 2414, 2183 (limited to Scott Lake area) and 2176 (all of it). The grand total of birds for these four forest roads was 4!!: single Gray Jay, Hairy and Black- backed WPs at Pine River and a Boreal Chickadee on Giant Pine Rd (the trail was absolutely quiet). Fire Lane Rd yielded the following total: 3 Black-capped Chickadees, 2 Red-br and 1 White-br. Nuthatches and a Spruce Grouse (after snowmobilers had gone thru)! And as others have posted, there is snow up there in contrast to here; 6 to 12 inches making for a colorful landscape. So, if any one is venturing up north in the next few weeks, be prepared for very quiet conditions.
