I decided to see if I could build my year list. I targeted 3 spp
(red-shouldered hawk, tufted tit-mouse, and least bittern). Last Thursday I
tried for the hawk at the Lakeshore Nature Preserve in Madison where one was
being seen regularly....but I dipped. I tried for the bittern late in the day
at Horicon Marsh but dipped on it also. On Friday, I tried for a tit-mouse
near New Berlin. I met the person who had been seeing it, but neither of us
saw it. I tried for it again on Saturday and finally saw 2 after looking for
nearly 3 hours. One interesting bird I saw there both days was pileated
woodpecker. This is the closest to Milwaukee that I've seen this sp. On
Sunday while attending a concert in West Allis I saw one nighthawk fly over.
Yesterday, I went back to the Preserve in Madison to try again for the RS hawk.
This time I was successful. It was in a dead tree with its wings
out-stretched trying to dry out from 36 hrs of rain. I tried later in the day
again for least bittern but dipped again. Today I tried 2 spots between Beaver
Dam and Waupun for shorebirds but saw nary a one. So, I saw 2 of the three
birds I targeted, and as noted by people more famous than me, "two out of three
ain't bad"
