Hi Wisconsin birders, I normally stay off this Listserv unless I'm back birding in Wisconsin, but I can't help myself in weighing in on this bird that's causing so much controversy today. Living in Arizona, I have the opportunity to observe both Vermillion Flycatchers and Say's Phoebes on a near daily basis. I'm 100 percent certain that the bird in Brian Hansen's photos is a female Vermillion Flycatcher. This plumage is typical for what I've been seeing lately for a spring female Vermillion Flycatcher. The streaking shown in Brian's photos is totally inconsistent with even the dullest juvie Say's plumages. Say's always have an even, 'blurred' chest, with no real streaking, never shows white like this bird does, etc... Beyond plumage basics, the shape and size the bird in Brian's photos is far more compact than Say's. (When fly catching, Say's will strike you as far larger, almost kingbird-like, while a Vermillion will be more empid-like.) The shape for this bird is right on for Vermillion, and all wrong for Say's. It lacks the long-tailed appearance, 'long and lean' look of Say's, and instead has the squatty, compact look of a Vermillion.
