Hi Fellow Birders, Thanks to Alex Stark for posting about the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE. I headed out to Picnic Point this afternoon to finally get a look at this bird. As described, it was right near shore on the south side of Picnic Point, opposite the small beach at the narrow point of the peninsula sheltered from today's stiff northwest winds. It was foraging with a mixed group of COMMON GOLDENEYES, COMMON MERGANSERS, CANADA GEESE, and BUFFLEHEADS. It offered excellent views in the setting sun. I wasn't expecting the BARROW'S to be one of the easier BIGBY birds of the year. I'll probably have to bike a little farther to get it next year if the lake freezes over! Several BALD EAGLES and TUNDRA SWAN flocks were still around, flying overhead. I turned back down the path along the north shore of the point that skirts along the Picnic Point 'swamp'. Just west of the two bathrooms near the aforementioned beach is a wood duck box on the eastern edge of the swamp. Since the sun had set and dusk was approaching I checked it on a whim. A gray EASTERN SREECH-OWL was perched in the entrance, eyes partly closed, ignoring my clumsy approach through the snowy brush. Given the cold days and nights ahead, I'd imagine this bird may stick tight to this roost if it can. Best wishes, Adrian Lesak Madison Dane County #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
