Yesterday, Ethan Gyllenhall, Alex Hale, and I checked the gull flocks in
Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Port Washington. This magnificent stretch of Lake
Michigan provided us with 8 gull species for the day which is quite
extraordinary in June, anywhere in North America.
We spent the most time in Sheboygan. Our biggest highlight of the day was a 1st
cycle bird that we felt confident calling a hybrid Lesser Black-backed x
Herring Gull (see photos). It was seen from the gazeebo at North Point. We also
had a 1st summer Thayer's Gull on the beach, north of Deland Park (very
bleached, see photos). On one of the rickety piers off the North Point parking
lot, we observed a 1st summer Little Gull with a full hood (after reviewing my
photos from 24 May 2014, this appears to be the same bird that I reported from
Manitowoc a few weeks ago). 9 Lesser Black-backeds were also recorded here but
this has more or less become the status quo for the Sheboygan lakefront in
summer. Unsurprisingly, none were adults.

The only highlight from Manitowoc was a 1st summer Little Gull that gave
amazing views from some 25 feet away (half-hood). We found less Bonaparte's
here (~100).

At Coal Dock Park in Sheboygan, we easily refound the adult Laughing Gull
reported by Tom Wood earlier in the day. It was sitting along the south
breakwall that borders the park.
