Led a volunteer bus tour at Horicon today. No Avocet either but did have
one great egret. Purple Martins and Yellow-headed Blackbirds at Marsh
Haven. Quite a few pelicans and our first Canada Goose goslings.

I started much later than Daryl and had somewhat different results, which
is
not unexpected in spring when change is constant.
By the time I got to the Jersey Road ponds, I couldn't find any shorebirds,
but the Bonaparte's Gulls were still present. I did find yellowlegs in a
few
other spots. However, at the boardwalk pond in Horicon National Wildlife
Refuge I did see 2 Greater and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, a Pectoral Sandpiper, a
Rusty Blackbird, and 2 Barn Swallows. Shortly after I had met Daryl earlier
in the morning, I saw all 5 Trumpeter Swans in the pond across from the
historical marker. I then went to Marsh Haven Nature Center where I saw
(FOY) Purple Martins- 3 males and 1 female. Also 3 Yellow-headed Blackbirds
were near the nature center building for a while. At about 10:30 A.M., I
saw
2 (FOY) Great Egrets, one on the north side of STH49, and one a flyover. A
White Pelican flew over but did not land.
There were more Northern Pintails than at first met the eye, north of STH49
and west of the historical marker. At first I thought there were about a
dozen, but something got the birds moving, and about 30 more flew up out of
the marsh with many remaining behind.
Alas, I couldn't locate the American Avocet.

I spent a few early morning hours at Horicon Marsh and vicinity. Lots of
both yellowlegs at various spots; ditto Bonaparte's Gulls (hundreds) in
some spots. At the Jersey/Breezy Pt pond there were 3 Pectoral Sandpipers
and a DUNLIN (FOY), that was starting into breeding plumage. At the
A/Jersey pond there were 6 Wilson's Snipe along with both yellowlegs.
Along 49 in the marsh a Yellow-headed blackbird was on the south side of
the
road. Also 2 Trumpeter Swans across from the historic sign and 3 on the
last pond of the Auto Tour. The boardwalk pond had been drawn down from
last week, but no shorebirds were present.
