After a late start, I got up to Dike Rd. at Horicon Marsh by late morning.
After apparently driving right past the pair of BLACK-NECKED STILTS, I
relocated farther east after another birder set me straight. The Stilts were
just past the water control structure, and were only about 50 feet out on the
south side, feeding in the downed phragmites. John Romano happened along
shortly after, and he recognized a COMMON MOORHEN'S call nearby. It finally
popped out from behind a clump and I think most of the assembled birders got a
look at it. Some of us also had a nice look at a SORA as it fed nearby. The
VIRGINIA RAILS were also quite vocal today, and I finally had a nice close
MARSH WREN singing on the north side (and saw another flying a surprisingly
long distance later.) As I left the dike, on a hunch I drove up the gravel road
that splits off and goes west where Dike Rd. curves. I've heard HENSLOW'S
SPARROWS there the last couple of years, up on the hill just before the parking
lot, and this year was no exception. Had at least two of them "tsi-licking"
from the grass up on the hill. Also heard CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS in the Bud Cook
Hiking Area, to the west of W. Point Rd. No sign of the WF Ibis (or much of
anything else) along Hwy 49.
