Nest Box Treasures WDNR Wildlife Educator, Liz Herzmann, will present a program on December 18th at the next meeting of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club. The meeting will start at 7p.m. and be held in the lower level of the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. Many birders are excited to be able to place a nest box on their property. Whether it is a Blue Bird, Kestrel, or Wood Duck box, the possibility of creating a new home for birds is enticing. But the real excitement is the actual monitoring of each box. The true benefit to wildlife (and the monitor) is routinely checking each box for damage, predators or invasive species. Without monitoring, many nest boxes are much less useful and you would not have the chance to find the ever exciting treasure! Checking nest boxes and the treasures inside can be a fun activity for kids, families, volunteers and all other dedicated nest box monitors. It is thought that each box is like opening a present, you never really know what is in the box until you open it up! Liz has collected many examples and photos of these treasures from Bird Club members and co-workers. Come see what interesting surprises nature leaves for us to find. You do not have to be a member of the Bird Club to attend this free program. All ages are welcome. For more information please visit www.horiconmarshbirdclub.com or call 920-387-7893. The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is located between the towns of Horicon and Mayville on Hwy. 28. Please use the lower entrance. You don't have to be a real "birdy" to enjoy this program ,bring a friend.
