My wife and I traveled up north last weekend to participate in the Book Across the Bay ski race from Ashland to Washburn. I had heard the Madeline Island ferry was still running, so thought I'd pick up some water birds for my 2012 list. In fact, there was little open water around Bayfield; the only reason the ferry is able to get through is because it keeps the channel open by breaking the ice on its trips back and forth to the island. I did, however, have some luck in the Ashland area. There were three Goldeneyes swimming with Mallards in Fish Creek where it passes under Hwy. 2. Another pair of Goldeneyes was out further in the lake. Two more pairs were observed in open water just east of the power plant in town.
