Two sharp-looking Herring Gulls

the Herring Gulls is stretching both wings while standing on one foot!)

Juvenile/1st-winter Herring Gull (in the pictures above). This gull had a
very blotched appearance... very pretty bird!

1st-winter Herring Gull, also pictured above in the 2-Herring-Gull photos.
Note the dark eye, pale backside (without gray back/scapular feathers
coming in, which would be a 2nd-winter Herring Gull trait). 2nd-winter
Herring Gulls also tend to have a paler, light-yellow eye, and more
pink-with-a-black-tip appearance. Some 2nd-winter Herrings can have a
mostly-dark bill, but most of them show the typical pink and black-billed
appearance.

Keep your eyes peeled for migrants from the north! Up here in Duluth, very
gusty north & northwest winds are predicted over the next two days :-)
