A huge THANK YOU to those who have used your binoculars, boots, bikes, birding skills, generosity, and passion to bring the current total raised by the Great Wisconsin Birdathon to nearly $48,000 to date. Donations are welcomed and encouraged through the end of June, so we hope to match 2013's $56,000 by then. We are still tallying team checklists, but we are guessing that this year's total number of species observed will easily surpass last year's total of 252 species. The final list will be posted later this week. Once again, the stats and stories of the Great Wisconsin Birdathon are a testament to Wisconsin's conservation ethic and proactive citizens. Here are a few highlights to date: - 70 birding teams and 180+ birders have participated. - The youngest team member was Maggie Paulios<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/participantpage.asp?fundid19&uid738&fkroledescid=1>, age 9, on the Bird City: McFarland team. - The oldest team member was Jean Clausen<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/participantpage.asp?fundid34&uid703&fkroledescid=1>, age 98, who helped The Mazomanie Mavens find 65 species, from her kitchen table just feet away from the Lower Wisconsin River. - Team Bird So Hard<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/teampage.asp?fundid89> found the most species - 192! Thanks to David La Puma, Max Henschell, Paul Schilke, Quentin Yoerger, and Tom Prestby for this amazing effort. - Cutright's Old Coots<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/teampage.asp?fundid66> raised the most money so far -- $4,731 as of today. Many thanks to Carl Schwartz, Tom Uttech, Joan Sommer, and Marilyn Bontly for their 21-hour Big Day, dedicated to the late, great Noel Cutright. - Bill Mueller coordinated the Long Walk for Birds, which involved around 40 birders who walked segments of a 300+ mile long route from Kenosha to Marinette. The Long Walk Team<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/teampage.asp?fundid73> has raised $7,834 to date and want to reach the $10,000 mark, to match what Bill's 246 mile Long Walk raised last year. - Lydia Martin<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/participantpage.asp?fundid09&uid615&fkroledescid=5>, a 15 year old from Mt. Horeb, did her second Great Wisconsin Birdathon as a 4-H project and raised $541 so far. Stay tuned for her Big Day results! - Natural Resources Foundation staffers fielded the first ever Foundation Flamingos<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/teampage.asp?fundid26> team! - This year's Birdathon involved 8 Bird Cities<http://www.birdcitywisconsin.org/>, 4 Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative organizations<http://www.wisconsinbirds.org/>, 7 Signature Teams, 8 Birding Blitz field trips, 39 Oriole Count teams<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/teampage.asp?fundid84>, and 20 individual teams! It is not too late to donate, so encourage your friends to support the 2014 Great Wisconsin Birdathon at WIBirdathon.org<http://www.WIBirdathon.org>. Support for any team or individual in any amount would be greatly appreciated! Birdathon donations support eight important bird conservation projects<http://www.wibirdathon.org/nrfw/cute_editor_uploads/BPF_priorities_2014.pdf> and leverage additional, sorely needed grant funding. Thank you again for devoting your time, skills, and resources to Wisconsin's birds!
