Speaking of Chimney Swifts... I stopped at the South Towne mall on the south side of Madison (more or less directly north of Nine Springs) on the way home from work today. As I got out of the car and started walking towards Shopko, I heard a twittering above me. I looked up and saw a few Chimney Swifts circling high above the parking lot. Then a few more, and more, and more. It's hard to count very accurately with zippy little birds like that, but I estimated at least 120 (which means, adding my usual 25% "undercount" factor, at least 150.) There isn't a large chimney in the area that I'm aware of, so I'm not sure if they kept going south or headed for a roost closer to the central city, but they were gone when I came out 15 minutes later.
