Hi I agree with Tom that this is an unfortunate situation. Ideally all counts would be submitted to National Audubon Society. With today's computer capabilities it is impressive on how available the data is for all the North American Counts Audubon Counts. One of the main reasons counts are done is to provide long-term data on bird populations. I assume some of this data is useful for bird conservation. My guess is that researchers or those interested in looking at CBC data are not going to go to the effort to find non Audubon count results. Many researchers probably are not aware of all the additional WSO counts done in Wisconsin. Sue and I coordinated Poynette Count. I also assist on 4 other counts. I will only assist with Audubon CBCs since I feel it is that important that the data should be available for everyone to use. I know that it can be difficult to collect the $5.00 from some field observers. However, Madison Audubon Society feels that it is very important to provide National Audubon with the CBC data for the Madison and Poynette Counts and covers all costs. This especially helps out the Madison compiler(s) that would have to collect $5 from 115 field observers this year. One idea in the future would be for Madison Audubon to have an endowment fund to cover CBC expenses. The Poynette CBC costs Madison Audubon Society about $125 - 22 field observers at $5@ and postage for feeder observers. Ideally if MAS had $3,000 in an endowment fund designated for funding the Poynette CBC, Madison Audubon would never have to raise or provide other funds to cover the Poynette count. We also try and make it easy to particpate as a feeder counter. The Poynette CBC has about 20 feeder observers. Some have email. The others are sent data forms along with a stamped return envelope. We also use printed address labels on data sheets and envelopes. It takes only a few days for all the data to arrive by postal mail. If you read this far you know that I feel strongly about supporting the National Audubon Bird Counts.
