On the way to Lake Michigan yesterday, Dan Doeppers, Jim Schwarz and I stopped at the Killsnake Wildlife Area in far southeast Calumet County. We found that Aebischer Rd. was closed both east and west of Lemke Rd., due to high water. Dan drove down the hill past the barricade a ways to the curve to turn around, and we stopped to listen to the Bobolinks, Sedge Wrens and Clay-colored Sparrows. I heard an odd two-note call, and eventually heard a distant but clear "bob-white". I heard the call again, and then another bird in the opposite direction, and heard a couple more "bob-white" calls. I believe there actually were three birds. The main question is whether these are released birds that somehow made it through a brutal winter? I heard a Turkey gobble from the direction of the only farm in the area, so I suppose the farmer could raise and release birds. Anyone have any idea of their status in that county?
