People who were birding Horicon National Wildlife Refuge today shouldn't
have had any trouble finding Black-necked Stilts. There were 4 south of
STH49 on the far east side of the pool east of the pumphouse (the drawn down
pool Daryl Tessen mentioned yesterday). There were 6 more in the drawn down
boardwalk pool along the autotour. At this pool there were also 8 Dunlin, 2
Solitary Sandpipers, 10 Pectoral Sandpipers and lots of both species of
yellowlegs. We probably won't enjoy this pool for long because refuge people
started up the pump while I was there. They could do shorebirds and
shorebirders a big favor by leaving it to dry by itself, but I guess they
have other priorities.
While I was near the boardwalk pool, 2 gentlemen informed me that they had
been photographing Black-necked Stilts on the east side of Old Marsh Road
near the blind, and they said there were at least 8. When I got there I was
able to find 6 of them.
Old Marsh Road is open through Monday, April 25 (in honor of Earth Day) for
hiking and bicycling. I walked only a short section because the cold wind
made it feel like early March!
As best I can tell, no Black-necked Stilts are at the Oakwood Road Pond.
