Wisbirders:
I returned today from a 5-day trip to SE AZ.  Joining me were fellow Wisbirders
John Romano and Dave Lund.  We made a pretty good team.  I know the area and
can sight ID most AZ spp. John is a good sound birder, which really helped Dave
and me who are hearing challenged.  Dave is an excellent photog and his photos
often were useful in clinching IDs we made.  Here's my (our) report....John and
Dave, correct any errors you see.  In summary, we saw over 160 spp including 11
hummers, all the western warblers, all the western orioles, 4 tanagers, 6 owls,
8 woodpeckers, 15 flycatchers, and 16 sparrows.

Saturday, April 24---We spent the entire day and and hour or so after dark on
Mt Lemon.  At Molino Basin,  we saw Scott's oriole, Townsend's warbler,
Cassin's vireo, Cassin's kingbird, zone-tailed hawk, and both Hammond's and
dusky flycatchers.  In Bear CYN, we saw Grace's, olive, and black-throated gray
warblers, painted redstart, and yellow-eyed junco.  In Rose CYN, we saw
violet-green swallows, red crossbill, greater peewee, and common black-hawk.
In Marshall Gulch,  we saw several red-faced warblers and painted redstart.  I
had left my speaker at the hotel but we did a little night-birding anyway.  In
Bear CYN,  we heard flammulated owl, common poorwill, and whip-poor-will.

Sunday---Along Canola (sp?) Rd, on the way to Madera CYN, we saw Costa's
hummer, rufous-winged sparrow, black-throated sparrow, and verdin.  In lower
Madera CYN in Florida Wash, we saw Bell's vireo and Lucy's warbler.  A quick
stop at Proctor Rd didn't yield much.  At the Madera Kubo Lodge, the
flame-colored tanager was well seen and heard (even by those
hearing-challenged).  Also present were hepatic tanager, BH grosbeak and both
Scott's and hooded orioles.  Near the Roundup trail-head and at the Santa Rita
Lodge, we saw AZ woodpeckers.  At the Rio Rico ponds just off I 19 were BB
whistling ducks, Lucy's warbler, Swainson's hawk, and Bullock's oriole.  Kino
Springs didn't yield anything of note.  At the Patagonia Roadside Rest, we
dipped on thick-billed kingbird but did see a pair of soaring gray hawks.  At
Patagonia L,  we saw Clark's grebe, Lucy's warbler, neotropical cormorant, and
McGillivray's warbler plus a fair number of common
species.  In the Patton's backyard, we s
aw violet-crowned hummer along with several other hummer spp, plus lazuli
bunting, Gambell's quail, summer and western tanagers and hooded oriole.  We
finished the day along Moson Rd east of Sierra Vista where, as expected, a few
lesser nighthawks came through at sunset.

Monday---We started at Carr CYN.  On the way up the mountain, we saw 2
Virginia's warblers.  At the Reef Townsite area, we had buff-breasted
flycatcher, hermit warbler, hepatic tanager, black-throated gray warbler,
band-tailed pigeon, bushtit, and 3 spp of vireos (Hutton's, Cassin's, and
plumbeous).  In Miller CYN, we saw a pr of spotted owls and red-faced warbler.
At the Beatty's feeders, we saw 8 spp of hummers with the best being
white-eared, magnificent, blue-throated, and calliope.  At the Ash CYN B & B,
we saw many Scott's orioles, both summer and western tanagers, and both male
and female Lucifer's hummer, our 11th hummer of the trip.  We went back to
Miller CYN after dark and ended up with a 5 owl day.  Besides the spotted owl
we had seen earlier, we heard western screech and GHO.  We heard, saw, and
photographed whiskered screech and elf.  We also heard a couple of poorwills.

Tuesday---We started at the San Pedro House where we saw lark bunting, Brewer's
sparrow, green-tailed towhee, Abert's towhee, many vermillion flycatchers,
Lucy's warbler, and brown-crested flycatcher.  We heard but didn't see gray
hawks.  In Huachuca CYN, we saw our only elegant trogon.  We went up Sawmill
CYN but saw nothing of note.  In the heat of the day there was little at the
Tubac Bridge.  At the Patagonia Roadside Rest, we again dipped on TB kingbird
but saw several white-throated swifts.  Along Mt Hopkins Rd, we saw a
rufous-crowned sparrow.  John and I were confident on the ID, but one of Dave's
(aka Dick) photos clinched it.  We tried Montosa CYN for black-capped
gnatcatchers, but dipped.

Wednesday---We started at Proctor Rd in lower Madera CYN where we saw both
brown-crested and dusky-capped flycatchers.  Above the Roundup trailhead,  we
saw a pr of dusky-capped FC.  Next it was on to Tucson where we found a very
late Lewis's woodpecker along Woodland Rd where it had spent the winter.  Just
before Aqua Caliente Park, we found a gilded flicker along the road.  Not much
in the park during the heat of the day.  Our last stop for the day and the trip
was Catalina SP where we saw several Lucy's warblers, a pr of black-tailed
gnatcatchers, rufous-crowned sparrow, and brown-crested FC.

All in all a good trip.
