Kent: I do believe you are correct in your assumption about nest cavity stains 
on woodpeckers. I suspect it depends on tree species and whether it be dead or 
alive tree.

Hello Marge & WBNers:

I have noted these stains as well on the red-bellieds and
pileateds coming to my feeders.  I haven't noticed if it is
limited to a particular sex but wonder if it could be related
to stains from the tree while incubating eggs.  I will check
more carefully to get a sense if that could be the case
(will note the sexes).
