Just passing this info. on as it was sent to me by Master Bander Thomas H. Nicholls......Ann Wick, Black Earth: May 30, 3:08 PM EDT Avian expert bands 500th falcon in Milwaukee MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee area man has banded his 500th peregrine falcon - the most of anyone in Wisconsin. Greg Septon attached the metal bands to the bird called Butch on Friday at a WE Energies power plant in Milwaukee. Only moments before, he had banded No. 499, a female named Lilly. The 56-year-old released his first peregrines in 1987 while working at the Milwaukee Public Museum. He began banding birds the next year. Today, he's a private consultant who has managed the peregrine recovery program in eastern Wisconsin for 22 years. Last spring, there were 27 nesting pairs, the most since 1987. Septon says he's still assessing this year's population. The insecticide DDT nearly wiped out peregrine falcons, and none lived in Wisconsin from 1965 to 1987. -- Thomas H. & Mary Lou Nicholls Nature Education Center P.O.
