A huge landbird flight occurred along the Lake Superior shoreline this morning.
In 5 hours at Herbster in northern Bayfield County I had 8,979 birds of 64
species in 5 hours at Herbster this morning. Top ten species were 4,925 Amer.
Robins, 1,232 N. Flickers, 794 Rusty Blackbirds, 769 C. Redpolls, 212
Yellow-rumped Warblers, 140 C. Grackles, 72 Purple Finches, 59 E. Starlings
(migrating!), 58 Pine Siskins, and 44 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. Also actively
migrating were Belted Kingfishers, Wilson's Snipe, Brown-headed Cowbirds, Fox
Sparrows, Bohemian Waxwings, Evening Grosbeaks, White-breasted Nuthatches,
Lapland Longspurs, and a Trumpeter Swan. Other notables were 91 Long-tailed
Ducks on the lake and one dark-morph Red-tail among a decent raptor flight
that got away from me inland.
