Found this interesting tip also which may help alleviate the problem. What a
great idea!

Split Win2k explorer
This tip explains how to run Windows Explorer as a separate process in
Windows 2000.
As many people know, Explorer is both a Windows shell as well as a file
manager. While this
is a good design in terms of usability, its not so good when it comes to
memory usage.
Under normal usage, Explorer may take as much as 8 MB of vital RAM from your
Win2000 system.
This is due to a memory allocation problem in which Windows uses twice the
total memory for
Explorer because it thinks it's using two separate programs. :( To solve
this "integration"
problem, you need to make Explorer run as two separate processes instead of
one. To do
this, run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advance
d

Look for the "SeparateProcess" DWORD [REG_DWORD] Value. Change its value
from 0 to 1. After
rebooting, Explorer will now run the shell and its file manager as two
separate processes
and will not try to allocate more memory than necessary." Courtesy of Andrew
Bourdon
Each new instance of Windows NT Explorer.exe will get its own thread.
Windows 2000's Explorer is particularly optimized for separate thread
operation.

Subject: [windows2000] doubleclick in explorer launches search window

We have one of those famous users who never admits to doing anything to
his PC. Who knows how the unauthorized software got in there? Anyway,
after deselecting thumbnail view on the network drive (which can cause
Windows Explorer to sputter searching such a huge area), he complains
that when he opens a folder he has to wait for it to quit searching. He
is correct. Using Windows Explorer, you can navigate in the folders
pane on the left, but doubleclicking a folder in the contents pane on
the right opens a Search window. This is a winxpsp1 machine. What has
he done? Oops, I mean what happened all on its own the very day he got
the computer that he has neglected to mention until now? TIA
