Are these files logs of conversations?  If so, are you sure they're
encrypted and not just binary files with "YM" format?  Not that I agree
with what your boss wants to do - he should just deal with the fact that
the employee is wasting time and not read his conversations - but
perhaps what you could do is install this YM thing on your computer and
just copy his files and open them in your instance of YM.
