Most high end switches let you set up "port mirrors" (aka spanning
ports). You plug your sniffer in one port, then your tell the switch to
"mirror" or "span" all traffic from the port of interest to the port you
plugged the sniffer in.

Some switches have a port (promiscuous I think its called) that allows you to see all traffic for this purpose.

Beginner at sniffing so a beginner question:
As I understand it, if I am using a sniffer on my local PC and
the PC is connected to a switch, it will only see
packets/traffic on that segment. Assuming that is in fact
correct, what do I need to sniff across the entire LAN?
