[windows2000] How to keep a machine in the domain

I'm in the process of recovering from a corrupted OS on my Dell PV775N NAS.
For some reason, the computer account insists on vanishing from the domain.
I join a workgroup, fine. Join the domain, fine, Next reboot, the domain
account has vanished and I have to join a workgroup again, etc etc etc
Has anyone met this one?
