Hi Nancy
In Winamp preferences, select the "input" branch of the plug ins section
of the tree view, and select the Nulsoft Midi player from the list. Tab
past the close button, and press the spacebar on the "configure" button.
Now, with your screen reader's mouse, you should find an item near the
top of the screen that says "device". Left click on this, and that
should bring up a combo box that you can navigate with your arrow keys.
This will show you what devices are available to play your midifiles.
This will include the Microsoft Midimapper, but, if there's nothing
else, there won't be anything for it to map to. As I said before, with
any luck, you may find the Microsoft Wave table, even if you don't have
any other synths installed. If it's there, select that, or anything
else that sounds like a synth, in the combo box, and press OK, and then
shift+tab back to the close button, and hit the spacebar on that. If
you don't have anything installed that can respond to the note and
program information which is what a midifile contains, then you won't
hear anything obviously; but at least you'll know why. What you do if
you have no software synths on your computer isn't the stuff of this
list, but you can always mail someone privately about it, or join
midi-mag.

Good luck

Reg
