I would also make sure to check the box that says, "Restore Winamp associations 
at startup." It's in the File Types section under Preferences. I always do that.

  Go in to the preferences, then choose file types. Select them al and also in 
the general options, uncheck the box that says check for new versions of winamp 
at start up.

  As a side note: go in to whatever player is the default and uncheck all file 
types. So for instance, if it is windows media player, go into the options and 
preferences and look for file types there. And uncheck them all.

    Friends: I'm  senile! How do you make winamp  your default  player? I got a 
new lap top computer  and  I installed it there, How do I make it my default  
player? because  on my desktop  I just  install  versions  over each  other.
