ADDITIONAL DAWN UPDATE
   -- Alert: Medical Assistance (MA) Dental Reimbursement Rate Meeting
==================================================
Alert: Medical Assistance (MA) Dental Reimbursement Rate Meeting

What: Meeting with area legislators about raising the MA reimbursement rate for dental care providers so that those who currently don't have access to dental care will be able to receive treatment.

When: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 from Noon to 2:00 PM, Lunch will be provided.

Where: Beaver Dam High School Auditorium, 500 Gould St., Beaver Dam, WI

Who should attend: Anyone concerned about the low rates dentists receive for patients covered by Medicaid.

Background: People who rely on MA for their dental care have found it difficult to locate dentists who take MA for payment. Dentists have been refusing to provide services to people on MA because their costs are higher than what MA pays them. Dentists are in business to provide services and make a living. Dentists report that they lose money serving people on MA. So rather than providing services to people who are covered by a system that doesn't pay for the total care, they refuse to treat them. Dentists have said that if the MA reimbursement rate were raised, they would provide services to people covered by MA.

More: The Dental Care Advisory Committee of La Crosse is organizing this meeting with area legislators. The intent is to raise awareness of the issue and to get legislator's support in raising the MA reimbursement rate. People who attend should be prepared to listen to the issues and tell their story. Additional meetings like this are being planned for the Milwaukee, and Madison areas. A previous forum was held in western Wisconsin and was very successful in communicating concerns to legislators. Hearing from MA recipients who have not been able to receive dental care made a strong impression on the legislators.

If you have questions about this meeting, contact Karen Knox, Office Supervisor, La Crosse County Health Department, (608) 785-9849.
