On an annual basis, our family seeks to hire a qualified & experienced educational interpreter who would also like the adventure of working overseas. This exciting position would provide educational interpreting for our ten-year-old deaf son who attends an English language-based school. In addition, professional opportunities exist to be involved with deaf community educational projects. This position is for the term August 2007 through June 2008.
Although the salary is not commensurate to that received in the U.S.A., we provide your own private housing, utility stipend, flights, visas’ fees, daily transportation (during working hours), and medical health insurance from the USA, making it possible to enjoy life and travel within Indonesia. Candidates should have a sense of adventure, are confident, and able to work with a high degree of independence, as well as being skilled as an interpreter, having had experience working with deaf children. She attended CSUN and Gallaudet University before receiving a B. A. in English Literature with a minor in English as a Second Language from San Francisco State University. Priscilla has worked as a research assistant with the ASL Literacy Research Project at San Francisco State University. She has also interpreted for Deaf persons and in medical, mental health and platform settings. For more than 15 years, she has taught ASL privately and at educational institutions including California State University Northridge and Vista College in Berkeley. After completing an intensive program in American Judicial System Interpreting in 1993, she began freelancing in the courts, enhancing access to the judicial system for Deaf consumers. Now a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), Priscilla continues to serve as a legal intermediary interpreter. Priscilla also does consulting work on American Sign Language and its cultural issues. Currently she serves on committee with RID, Deaf Members in Leadership (DML). Besides DML committee involvement, she is also a part of NCEIC program developing curriculum for Deaf people interested in pursuing Deaf interpreting. ASL Weekend is back! The 2007 ASL Silent Weekend will take place in Rosholt, WI, at Lions Camp on May 4th, 5th and 6th. This event is sponsored by Wisconsin ASLTA, WAD and WisRID.
The ASL Weekend Committee is looking for motivated students to serve as Support Staff for the whole weekend. In exchange for your volunteer work, your registration will be waived. Lodging and food at Lion’s Camp is also included. Here are some (but not all) of the duties that a Support Staff might be doing:
• Helping with registration and questions. • Selling raffle tickets and door prize tickets.• Monitoring people coming in for meals and directing them to Deaf Mentor tables.
• Setting up workshop rooms with appropriate chairs and tables.• Assisting presenters during their respective workshop, handing out RID CEU stickers at the end of the workshop. • Making important announcements either before or after workshops regarding changes in schedule or general reminders.
Support Staff will not miss more than one, if any, activity/workshop as a result of accomplishing these duties. Regular breaks will be given to allow our hard working Support Staff to have some fun too! If you are interested in applying, you must meet the criteria below:
• You must either BE a member of WisRID, ASLTA or WAD OR be willing to become a member.
• You must be able to stay for the entire weekend.• You must be able to arrive at Lions Camp at 12:00 on Friday, for setup, and be able to stay until 2 PM on Sunday, for clean up (this is non-negotiable).
