Hi Eleanor,

I've been to the site where the application form is, and where the form to
fill in says, "type in the letters you see above", or something similar, is
where there is a CAPTCHA graphical image. The thing about these images is
that they contain characters which are deliberately distorted to prevent
machine recognition of 'any' kind. However, the computers are catching up
with that sort of thing all the time, and in a few years' time these images
will not be as effective in telling computers and humans apart as they
presently have been and will therefore have to be discarded. One way around
that scenario is to use audio - spoken characters against a background of
white noise of some kind so that it sound distorted to prevent recognition
by a speech-recognition program - but this discriminates against people with
a hearing impairment, etc. Anyway, in this case no audio 'workaround' was
provided.

Flor you are indeed quite right in everything you say. I am of the opinion
that in joining this list I need a settling down period in terms of knowing
people and their competencies in relation to I T. This said I think a new
person to any situation whether it be a list like this, someone new coming
in to a club or work place always upsets the general dynamics of things
initially and then it all settles down again. If this is highly sensative
then maybe criteria should be set for people joining the list and in this
way should sighted people or those with residual vision not fall in to the
joining criteria then exclusion would make the membership watertight.

Now come onfolks I will not mention visual things again and this way let's
just try and get on with things. There will be some of you that will know me
and undoubtedly the majority of you will not but for those who do, you will
know that I am 100% comfortable with those without vision and where I can
ever help (again not being patronising) I am only too delighted to do so.

Have a good Bank Holiday weekend.

Eleanor
