Eamonn,
I upgraded from basic to digital with NTL in 2007 in response to one of their special offers. Like you, I was told that I would have to switch from paying a yearly subscription to direct debit. I agreed to this reluctantly. At the time I had about 6 months left on an existing annalogue payment. I received no request for the extra payment for the digital service until this time was nearly up. Soon after paying over this difference I received a bill for 2 months instead of a year. It struck me as odd, as they were now creating more work for themselves, but I went along with it. My subsequent bills have arrived at the start of each 2-month period. Payment is requested within a week to 10 days with the threat of being cut off if it is not made in time with a charge for reconnection. I believe they are very much hung up on payment by direct debit because they are more likely to be paid on time with less administrative work in chasing arears or losing customers through cutting them off. You might try switching to digital, as I did, and see if they respond in a similar manner. If you are fundamentally opposed to payment by direct debit, maybe the trick is to tell them that you are going to cancel your account when your current payment runs out giving your reason. I suspect they don't like losing customers especially those whom they know can be relied upon to pay on time.
Sean.

Subject: [vicsireland] query: NTL payment options

Hi folks,

Question: Are payment methods other than Direct Debit available if
subscribing to NTL’s digital TV service??

Background: I currently have an annual subscription to NTL’s analogue
basic tv package

I’d like to upgrade to their basic digital TV service, though am not
prepared to go with Direct Debit , as a means of payment.

When I rang them a day or two ago, I was told I’d no option but to commence
the service with direct Debit.

I explained that I know 2 people who recently upgraded, receive a paper
bill, and pay in the post office.

It didn’t cut any ice though!

All advice welcome.

Regards,

Eamonn
