Best wishes, Tony -----Original message----- From: ronan.macneice@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 16:13:47 +0000 Subject: Assistive technology in Raheny Library Dear Mr Murray In Raheny Library, we now have a computer available for the public to use free of charge which has the following assistive technology software. MAGic which magnifies whatever is on the screen. With headphones, the person using it can also have the text read back to them. This software is aimed at people who are visually impaired. JAWS is for people who are blind. KURZWEIL 1000 is aimed at the visually impaired. It allows a person to scan a page of text onto the screen and then, if they choose, to have the text read back to them through headphones. A person can choose from a range of voices and can slow or speed up the reading. The scanned text can also be magnified and text/background colours can be changed. KURZWEIL 3000 is similar to KURZWEIL 1000 but is also aimed at people with reading difficulties. I have found that people with visual impairment tend to prefer this than KURZWEIL 1000. We also have a magnifying unit in the library where people with a visual impairment can place a newspaper or the pages of a book under a magnifier and have it magnified onto a screen in front of them. This is not a computer and is very easy to use. I would be grateful if you would let anyone know who you think might be interested in this service. The opening hours for Raheny Library is Monday – Thursday 10am – 8pm and Friday – Saturday 10am – 5pm. If you or anybody else have any queries, please feel free to contact me. The library phone number is 8315521 and my email address is ronan.macneice@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Yours sincerely Ronan Mac Neice Librarian Raheny Library
