[va-richmond-general] Re: FW: Northern Goshawk

Through my binoculars the bird I saw had a definite light stripe above the eye 
althought it is not clear on the photos. It did not have the white cheek, also 
a characteristic of Cooper's. The tail had a distinctive "zig-zag" (stripes 
offset on either side of the feather stem)strip per Peterson's guide. This is  
not evident in the Cooper's. The confusing thing was the white upper chest 
without brown stripes seen in both the Cooper's and Northern Goshawk. Also, the 
bird was larger than the specs for a Cooper's per Peterson. I think Cooper's 
are more bird feeders than small animals.  I'm open for other opinions.  It was 
the spectacle of this large bird rather than 100% assueance of ther species.
